Claudia Thompson, proprietor of Providence has a distinctive eye and a natural talent for creating intimate and exciting interiors. From the beginning, Providence customers have loved the energy and aesthetic of the shop. They would often ask how they could get the same effect in their homes. Claudia has fulfilled this need for a no fuss design service that takes the mystery out of interior design.
"Truly listening to the client and giving them a new perspective is what I do best." Whether you are starting from scratch; have wonderful pieces but don't know what to do with them; or just need a fresh approach to your home, Claudia offers in-home consultations. "I can transform your home in just a few hours with existing pieces and break-it-down to what your home needs. Be prepared for some surprises." Style is a strong part of Claudia's life; however family, friends, travel, and the everyday experiences of being alive are what influences her the most. "I bring this enthusiasm to my shop and to my clients' homes. Style starts from the inside out, not the other way around."
The following are Claudia's seven design principles:
1. Really think of what you want from a room. Do you want to feel your presence? (You may opt for cool tones or shades of neutrals) Do you want to feel embraced by your surroundings? (Heavy textures and deep colors may be for you).
2. Don't let everything be the star of the show. If you want to highlight an art collection, you don't need loud upholstery or rugs competing. If you love fabrics, you may consider having your art less intense. By narrowing down what you enjoy, you can let other elements be the supporting players.
3. Scale and proportion are vital. Common mistakes people make are buying small accessories for their home. Tall slim lamps on a buffet make your room soar. A large vase with a tree branch adds instant drama. A low chaise in a ranch house will make the ceilings appear taller. These are the impacts you want in a room.
4. Ideally, you want balance, not necessarily symmetry at every angle in a room.
5. I love the unexpected. I can't tell you how many clients have taken my suggestion of putting their child's abstract creation in the most ornate gold frame. Or making a bathroom or a kitchen into an art gallery complete with damask window treatments. (This can take attention away from fixtures that are not state of the art.)
6. Contrast is the key to a unique interior. Put a sleek floor lamp next to a Louis the XV chair, or pair a dead serious portrait with a modern vase, this adds an element of surprise.
7. Don't take the heart and soul away from a room. Keep photos out; let your children have toys in a corner. This is your life and it's the most beautiful element of all. You can feel it when a house lacks a true soul and everything is too perfect. Let your life flow through.
These seven design principles, combined with years of experience, and access to the Industry, make Claudia Thompson's interior design a tremendous service. "Most importantly, I am a good listener. I want a satisfied client whose environment is an expression of who they are and a place they can call home."
